periASTY addresses a critical gap in Europe’s climate transition: the integration of peri-urban areas into decarbonisation efforts. Peri-urban areas, which connect cities with their wider regions, face distinct challenges such as dispersed populations, inefficient energy consumption with limited renewable integration, less effective waste collection strategies, and governance tools focused on city centres rather than whole Functional Urban Areas (FUAs).
To overcome these barriers, periASTY develops tailored solutions that fully integrate peri-urban areas into the climate neutrality transition, supporting Europe’s 2030 climate objectives.
periASTY introduces periInnovations: flexible and adaptable solutions specifically designed for peri-urban environments. The periInnovations cover four key areas: mobility, energy, industry, and governance. They are co-designed with citizens, local authorities, and other stakeholders, with demonstrations in nine Living Labs in Dublin (Ireland), Limassol (Cyprus), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Marseille (France), Guimarães (Portugal), Helmond (Netherlands), Kalamata (Greece), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Sisslerfeld (Switzerland).
periASTY contributes to the EU Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” objectives.
Key Objectives
Understand peri-urban-urban dynamics and co-design mobility, energy, and industry concepts along with business and governance models with stakeholders and citizens.
Enhance industrial efficiency, circular economy, and waste management; support peri-urban industries in the green transition.
Develop peri-urban mobility innovations to improve accessibility, safety, efficiency, inclusivity, and reduce emissions and congestion.
Deploy and evaluate peri-urban innovations in 9 living labs and build skills through the periSKILLS Academy.
Accelerate clean energy production, grid decarbonisation, and related business models and pricing schemes.
Promote upscaling, dissemination, and knowledge transfer to support peri-urban climate neutrality integration.
