Limassol (Kourion)

Peri-urban areas of Limassol, particularly within the Kourion Municipality, face increasing mobility challenges related to strong dependence on private vehicles, limited integration of transport services, and insufficient accessibility to key destinations. The dispersed spatial structure of the area and the lack of efficient multimodal connections constrain sustainable mobility options.

These challenges particularly affect residents without access to private cars, including vulnerable population groups, and contribute to unequal access to services, employment, and social activities. Through the periASTY project, the Limassol (Kourion) Living Lab will demonstrate integrated solutions combining mobility, governance, and digital innovation to improve accessibility and reduce reliance on private cars in peri-urban areas.

The Living Lab will contribute to the development of more connected and efficient transport systems, supporting multimodality and better integration between services and infrastructure. In parallel, the project will enhance coordination among local authorities, stakeholders, and citizens through improved planning tools and governance frameworks.

Overall, these interventions aim to support the transition of the Limassol peri-urban area towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and climate-neutral mobility system.

Expected outcomes

Circle Orange

Mobility

  • Deployment of shared demand-responsive transport for families, people with disabilities, commuters, and tourists, enabling flexible door-to-door mobility in peri-urban areas.
  • Optimisation of routes, stops, and timetables using simulation tools and updated GTFS data, leading to increased reliability, coverage, and operational efficiency.
  • Synchronisation of peri-urban transport services with urban mobility hubs, improving first- and last-mile connectivity and facilitating seamless transfers between modes.
  • Increased attractiveness of shared and public transport alternatives, supporting a modal shift towards more sustainable travel patterns.
Circle Orange

Industry

  • Deployment of a digital platform providing real-time information on reusable materials (e.g., construction, furniture, electronics) through enhanced Green Dot infrastructure.
  • Implementation of smart waste management systems (e.g., bin tagging, optimised routing), leading to more efficient recycling processes and reduced operational costs.
  • Development and application of a Local Green Deal (LGD) Action Plan supporting sustainable practices across key sectors (e.g., construction, tourism, energy).
  • Introduction of a platform enabling citizens and businesses (B2C and B2B) to exchange, reuse, and valorise materials and waste streams.
Circle Orange

Governance

  • Deployment of a cross-sectoral data warehouse integrating mobility, energy, and other datasets to support holistic planning at the functional urban area (FUA) level.
  • Use of real-time and simulated data to support transport optimisation, service planning, and policy evaluation.
